KSMO is closing by the end of 2018

Sadly the city council has decided to close the airport after their FAA mandate has passed. If you have not visited this airport, you should try to make it before it closes!

Approaches

If you’re flying a single piston and we’re landing 21 that day, it’s likely you’ll fly the FERN7 arrival with DARTS transition. From there, you can expect RNAV 21. One oddity that happened to me (I also chatted with other pilots who frequent the area, they’ve also seen this for other airports in the area too.) is that you might not get cleared for the approach until right before FAF and you might get stuck high. The controller will manually step you down and you will not be able to actually fly the LPV.

Parking

If you’d like to use the FBO, there’s Atlantic on-site. However, if you only need parking, the airport also has transient parking. It is shown on the airport diagram and it is in front of the airport terminal where a lot of people is watching airplanes. The transient tie down numbers are prefixed with T. There are only a few spots available though, if it is full, you might be forced to use Atlantic.

If you parked at the transient parking, you might get asked a lot of questions from the people at the viewing area. 😆

Fees

KSMO unfortunately has a landing fee even for single piston. It is invoiced monthly and will be sent to the owner of the airplane.
